What Is Fat Grafting?
Fat grafting is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that uses the patient’s own body fat to enhance the appearance of their face or augment a part of the body. The goal of fat grafting is to reduce symptoms of aging by adding additional volume, or restoring lost volume, to the face with the body’s own extra fat being used as an injection.
The patient’s body fat is typically collected from areas of the body such as the buttocks, thighs or abdominal area, where people typically hold unwanted fat. The patient’s fatty tissue is collected using liposuction, purified then mixed with PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma), which contains growth factors. A small amount of the patient’s blood is drawn at this time and put through a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets full of the growth factors. These natural growth factors are important and help the survival rate of a patient’s fat after the injection has been performed. Dr. Kevin Sadati is responsible for extensive research on the use of Platelet-Rich Plasma being utilized to promote greater fat grafting retention, which was published by The American Journal of Cosmetic Surgery in 2006.
Up front costs of fat grafting with PRP are slightly more expensive than temporary dermal fillers, but since the fat grafting results are permanent over time the patient saves money by not having to under go frequent treatments of derma fillers.
What are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are synthetic products that are used during non-surgical cosmetic procedures, such as the liquid facelift. These in-office procedures are quick and effective, and dermal fillers are used in order to add volume to the face while eliminating lines and wrinkles at the same time. Results are instant, and there is virtually no recovery after the fact.
Given the fact that dermal fillers are synthetic products, some patients may have an adverse reaction to them and there are more side effects associated with dermal fillers. These injectibles must be repeated more often in order to maintain results. Most patients find that dermal fillers provide results that last for about six to nine months. This is dependent on the patient’s own body metabolism which effects how long results will last.
